Well, I’m gonna do it – I’m opening my own business.

Sort of.

See, money has gotten to be a bit on the tight side lately, what with my actually attempting to pay off my credit cards within a reasonable amount of time and all that, so I’ve decided to take up some extra work on the side. Extra tech support work, stuff I’m already good at, stuff there’s already a market for.

So, I’ve started compiling a list of prices that currently existing support places charge, just as a baseline so I know what would be fair and what I should shoot for in order to undercut them, yet still remain profitable in the long run. I’ve also started looking into getting bonded so that I don’t have to worry as much about lawsuits or the like.

There are a few things I’m not fully comfortable with, but I’ve got the support of my parents backing me on this, so it’s not like I’m doing it entirely on my own. I hope to be up and running fairly soon, and once that happens, well… Who knows?

Side note: Have you seen what Geek Squad charges for stuff? $170 for a single application install! $150 to burn a DVD! I’m really not getting paid enough at work, that’s for damn sure…

As I write this, it’s about an hour until the Large Hadron Collider goes live, ending the world and all we know not actually doing much more than letting us know if our current theories on physics and such are correct or not.

I think it’s kind of funny that people get worked up over silly things such as this. Today, it’s slamming particles at one another at 99.999% C, just a few years ago it was the Y2K Bug, and before that? Rap Music.

I wonder – does humanity always have to have something to run screaming from? Are we, as a species, incapable of accepting that things are pretty much not that bad and we probably won’t end up going out in a blaze of accidental technological destruction?

That’s not to say we don’t have anything to worry about, because we sure as hell do. There’s the whole Climate Shift thing going on, and the steady threat of Nuclear Annihilation, but we spend more time worrying about things that aren’t going to kill us – or have a near zero chance anyway – than we do actually doing something about those that will kill us

Bah! Maybe the LHC will just rip a tiny hole in space-time, allowing the minions of the dark Mirror Universe to spill over onto our Earth, bringing in a thousand thousand years of pain, suffering and tiny pointed goatees.

I think that there might be something sinister hiding in the new Google Chrome browser.

Something to do with Akamai Technologies.

But I can’t really prove it yet.

Turns out my fears were unjustified. Oops.

There are a few things on needs before being able to use the Netflix Watch Instantly feature on their Mac:

  • A copy of Windows
  • Patience

Which of those two do you suppose I am not known for having?

Other than a few mild issues with the quality of the video due to buffering and home-network issues that seemed to be resolved by simply allowing the movie to play for a few minutes, and a few technical problems caused by not having Windows updated correctly because I use a fucking Mac, I didn’t have any major issues getting this working.

What I managed to take away from this is a renewed enthusiasm for the Netflix service, and a burning desire for the damn XBox update to happen sooner.
