Well… Rich tipped me off to this, and it seems fairly legit: After much speculation, the Star Trek Experience will most likely be reopening at the Neonopolis next year!

Source.

From that short blurb, they have the go ahead, and sounds like they have the funding. It also sounds like there will be “upgrades”, which – I hope – means they’ll finally update the flyby portion of the Klingon Encounter.

I really hope this goes through. I’ve missed being able to head down to Quarks and get a WarpCore and Talaxian Turkey wrap… If this goes through, it’ll be a pleasant surprise.

Kirk, Spock, McCoy and The Rest

Kirk, Spock, McCoy and The Rest

It was 42 years ago today that a man with a tan, his green blooded wingman and a cussing country doctor took to the skies and brought down a salt sucking alien.

That’s right, 42 years ago today Star Trek first showed up on the airwaves, paving the way for Americans of all ages to enjoy hammy acting, cheap sets and more smarm than ever thought possible.

So, if you’re in the Las Vegas area, why not join me tonight at Qua-
Oh, right.

And now I’m sad.

Happy Birthday Federation, now try not to suck too hard in the new movie.

Well, the Star Trek Experience is no more – the closing ceremony was last night. It was actually done very well, from the nice speeches to the entire working “cast” getting an introduction by Lady Q (Suzie Plakson in a red dress I’m sure she was glued into), followed by the presentation of the Federation Banner to the crew member who’d been there the longest.

Never thought I’d see a Vulcan cry. To her credit, she tried so damn hard to hold tight and not break character. She almost made it too…

Except for some rowdy asshats in the audience – probably closet Trekkies trying to assert their threatened manhood – it was a surprisingly tasteful close to what was, basically, a kitschy, tacky Vegas attraction from a by-gone era.

The STE, from Quarks to the rides, shops and all, was almost a second home to me, a gathering point for many various friends. It managed to play a role in some of my favorite moments here in Vegas, and it was a genuinely fun thing to do in Vegas that wasn’t trying to be something it wasn’t. I’ll miss it, but I’m very glad I was there for the last day of that monument.

One of the crew members remarked that this shouldn’t be met with too much sadness, for

“with everything Trek, anytime something ends it’s almost always replaced with something bigger and better.”

I do hope he’s right.

Things to do In Vegas This Week

This looks like it’s a fairly busy week, geek wise, here in Sin City: We’ve got the Black Hat convention, followed by DefCon (the hacker convention), and the Official Star Trek convention.

I do wonder about the timing – it seems a bit fortuitous that the hackers would schedule their con for the same weekend as the Trekkies. Probably killing two birds with one stone.

I’m going to be attending at least one day of the Trek con – Sunday. Gonna check out the Voyager reunion panel (I’m sorry, but Voyager was my favorite series), as well as The Two Spocks and Star Trek Online, the big reveal for the MMO that’ll be eating my spare monies next year.

I’m also considering hitting up DefCon, if only for the badge: It looks super sweet, having an IR port and an SD card slot, and… Stuff that I don’t fully understand. Even if I don’t go, though, you can bet your ass I’m going to lock my wireless down the fuck tight, or at least as tight as I can.

And BlackHat? Yeah – I’ll just read about it in the journals. :)
