Well, it’s almost the weekend (three day weekend time for me), and I’ve yet to follow through on my threat to post something else in the blog… So, I suppose that – while it’s a bit slow around the office – I’ll post a few thoughts.

Lately, I’ve been playing a lot of Saint’s Row 2 on the PS3. I bought it on a bit of a whim – LittleBigPlanet was pushed back a week for some rather dubious reasons, but I still wanted something new to play. I had really enjoyed the first Saint’s Row, and since I had just traded in Grand Theft Auto IV for store credit, I figured what the heck, it wouldn’t cost me a thing to pick it up.

I’m really glad I did. (more…)

Demo on XBL and PSN

Demo on XBL and PSN

It’s been a while since the last time I was excited about a new game hitting – I think MGS4 was the last game I actually got all excited over.

Star Wars : The Force Unleashed is one that I’m really looking forward to. Not sure if I’m exactly excited about it or not, but I am really hoping to be.

Tonight I’ll be downloading the demo and giving it a spin – and, since it’s on both XBox Live and Playstation Network, I figure I’ll download them both, and compare the two. I did this once before with Burnout: Paradise, so I figure this might be a good chance to try that again.

As a bonus, and just because I’m a total dork, I’ll LiveBlog the whole thing right here.

So, stay tuned for the fun.

Started downloading the demo on both XBL and PSN. Started the download on XBL before PSN, might have been a mistake. For some odd reason the demo weighs in at ~905MB on XBL and ~1350MB on PSN. That’s a strange ~400MB difference… Could the PSN Demo have higher resolution textures or is it just coded poorly?
Last time a saw a strange difference in file size like this was with Spore, and it turned out EA had just wrapped the Windows version of spore in Wine before releasing it on the Mac.

Maybe LA is wrapping the PS3 version of the game in an XBox emulator… YOU READ IT HERE FIRST!

Still downloading, I’m going to go take a short nap… I’ll post more when I get up.
  • 19:25-
Woke up from nap, demo was done downloading on XBox. Gave it a test drive.
    OMFG THIS IS NEAT
    Hard to control though.
  • 18:05-
At “boss” – Yeah, kinda hard – still awesome.
Once you figure it out, it’s a little *less* awesome.
  • 18:19-
Gonna give the PS3 a go – “installing” the demo. Man, this is one area where the XBox gets it right.
    Weird. (more…)

The High Cost of Consoles

Thought this was interesting – Someone asked how much I’ve put towards gaming, and so I attempted to the math… The results were a bit shocking. (more…)

METAL GEAR SOLID 4 : Guns of the OMFGSWEET!

I wish I could review this game – I so wish I could give you my full thoughts and feelings on this landmark Playstation 3 title, this gem which will forever change the way we think of video games.

But, I can’t. I’ve only logged a couple of hours into it so far – but those couple of hours have been fucking great. As always, the voice acting is spot on, the animation is smooth and realistic, and the enemy AI is pretty darn smart – even on the “Please Don’t Hurt Me” level.

Yes, I play through in pussy mode.

So far I’ve already had quite a few laugh out loud moments, and I expect them to just keep coming.

Honestly, if you have a PS3 you really owe it to yourself to GET THIS GOD DAMN GAME!

Playstation 3 Linux Install – Second Go

Welcome to the second live blog of a linux installation on my Playstation 3. This time I’ll be attempting to install Yellow Dog Linux 6.0 on the PS3.

Let’s get dangerous!

2:05 AM
Booted up the PS3 and put in the DVD.
Did the “Install Other OS” jive, restarted PS3

2:08 AM
Booted into the installer – can’t find mouse, hopefully I won’t need it.

2:14 AM
Playing with a few options in the installer. Adding FTP and SMB support – probably will use neither, but still might come in handy. So far this is going much smoother than the other install.

2:18 AM
At a new install screen. The “big” one. Wow, fast install. YDL > Ubuntu?

2:28 AM
Still installing. Abut 33% done. Yay?
Still wondering why I might be doing this – probably because I kind of want to check out this other distro, but mostly because I just don’t want to go to sleep right now. Too much going on, and sleeping is not something that will be good for me. Mind wandering and all that. Can’t have that, might wander too far and get lost.

2:43 AM
Well over 75% done. No funky hanging, no weirdness at all.
Really digging how well this is going. If the distro works as well as it installs, I’ll be fairly surprised.

3:05 AM
Well, that went much better than I expected. After logging in for the first time, things work how the probably should. Has crude Flash support – not enough for YouTube though, so that still sucks. Also can’t seem to figure out how to get bluetooth keyboard and mouse added, might have to troll some forums.

All said, so much better than the Ubuntu installation.
