(Not Actual Boxart)

Sunday the latest installment in the multi-billion dollar Super Mario Bros. franchise was released to… Well, I’m sure quite a few happy fans. I can’t say how many exactly, as I don’t have the figures right here in front of me, and frankly I can’t be arsed to look it up. Suffice to say, it was probably more than four.

The important thing here is this is the best Super Mario game since Super Mario World, on the Nintendo Entertainment System. That’s right folks, it’s taken them over a decade to release a game as fun as that old school classic.

I should, maybe, clarify my position on the Mario franchise before I go further: I tend to view Super Mario World as the pinnacle of Mario platform gaming. I loved SMB3, although I prefer SMB2, on the NES – and I enjoyed Super Mario Land 2 on the GameBoy… but I found New Super Mario Bros. DS to be too short, Super Mario 64 too devoid of everything that made Mario fun and entertaining, and the less said about Super Mario Sunshine the better.

Super Mario Galaxy was okay, but it wasn’t the game I wanted – I wanted a true, 2D side scrolling platformer filled with power-ups, jumps, enemies whose heads I jump on, and simple, classic, old school controls.

In other words, I wanted a game that wouldn’t make me shout “GET OF MY DAMN LAWN!” at passers by. (more…)

This weekend I picked up a Nintendo DSi for myself, after having bought one for Nadia for her birthday. For those who have no idea what I’m talking about, the DSi is the second hardware revision of Nintendos popular dual-screened portable game system. The difference this time are larger, brighter screens and integrated cameras.

So, new week, new posts.

As I said last week, I want to post at least one thing each day – I’m hoping this counts as my one thing for the day. It’s not an actual entry, I’ll admit that upfront. It’s more an appetizer, a menu of the entries that will be posted this week.

First up, tomorrow I’ll be posting my thoughts on the brand new Nintendo DSi. After giving one to Nadia for her birthday, I had to get one for myself. Was it worth it? Is it worth replacing a DS Phat/Lite with one of these? Find out my thoughts tomorrow!

Wednesday, a rant on the scourge of the English language- How “you know” has seemingly replaced “um” in most peoples spoken vocabulary.

Thursday, I’ll drop my thoughts on the Fallout 3 expansion “Broken Steel” – does the new “ending” fit the game better, and is the new content worth the ten bucks?

And, finally, Friday will be a nice review of the new Star Trek movie. I’ll be seeing the movie – along with Nadia, Rosenberg, Tabby and (maybe) Bighead and my Dad – so I’ll include a wide array of viewpoints on the movie. Everyone from the die-hard Trekkie to new-comers will be represented in this no-holds barred discussion on what is my most anticipated movie of the summer.

So, stick around this week – as you can see, there’s loads of stuff worth reading headed your way.

Last night I loaned my DS to Nadia. She’d mentioned previously that she might maybe want one someday, but right now maybe using mine would be wiser… So I packed up my DS Lite, the charger and a handful of games (XX/XY – Feel the Magic, New Super Mario Bros, Super Princess Peach, Animal Crossing, Nintendogs, Kirby Squeak Squad, Pokemon Diamond) and handed them over to her for safe keeping and fun use…

Not entirely sure why I’m blogging about it. I didn’t really ever use my DS in the first place, but if I do miss it I still have my DS Phat to keep me company, or the PSP if it comes to that. I guess a part of me, the nerdy part of me, is just very happy to see her wanting to barrow and play some of the games I enjoy – and wanting to get some games of her own.

I guess, on that level, it makes me realize even more that we really are a great match.

Odd thing to key in on, I know…

Just a few things that I thought I would mention about today…

First, the Doctor Horrible Sing-A-Long Blog went live today. It’s pretty much what it sounds like, a new web based TV mini-series written by Buffy creator Joss Whedon. It stars Neil Patrick Harris, and it’s also a musical.

About a super villain, who’s not really all that villainous. He’s a bit like Doctor Forester in that department, the wanting to be more evil than he really is.

Secondly, E3 is underway right now, and today Nintendo and Sony took the stage, following Microsofts conference yesterday.

We go now, live, to Commander William T. Riker of the USS Enterprise for his take on the Nintendo Conference:

Thanks Will.

The Sony conference? Fucking sweet. Movies, more fun games, PSP stuff… It was what gaming used to be.

It was awesome.

Finally, I saw Wanted tonight.
A fucking fine movie, hilarious and good action.

Although, part of that might also be based on who I saw it with.
More on that… Later.
