Entry 0192

21 May

I realize I haven’t made an entry in the blog for a while – been busy, I suppose.
Also, I just haven’t felt the urge to write for while. It happens, so don’t panic. I’ll write when I write, and when I don’t, well… Read something else. :p

Last night, I found myself controlling my Mac mini (which acts as a media hub in the living room), with my iPhone using two different apps, and wondering how soon this kind of thing might become “normal”. Not controlling a computer with your phone over your home network, but controlling your computer using a smaller, portable, touch screen interface.

A neat little media center tool...

A neat little media center tool...

So, today I decided to check out Boxee – again – a neat little program that replaces media centers – like Front Row – on all three major OSes – Mac, Windows and Linux.

Technically, it’s still in Alpha, but it’s very stable and very useable – something I couldn’t have said for it just a few months ago.

For those that care about these things, it’s based on the XBMC. Not really sure if that matters or not, as it’s light-years ahead of XMBC in terms of features and usability. See, this thing not only ties in with the media you already have – and will allow you to play it back with subtitles if you so choose, something which I find awesome – but it also ties into the majority of the internet based video services – like ABC, CBS, Hulu and YouTube. It also allows for easy adding of podcasts – video and audio. Shit, it even does Netflix – Better than the 360, I dare say.

Basically, it’s your ones stop shop for all your playback needs… if you have a media center computer. I’ll admit, I’ve had it lock up a few times – but only when I was really dicking around with the more advanced settings or features. But for basic, everyday use – it works, and it works great. Setup is a breeze, and use is pretty damn fun.

All said, if you got some need for playing stuff back on a PC, and that PC might be hooked up to a TV, then this be the thing for you.

27 Jul

Just finished up a bit of minor site tweaking, made a few changes to the general design (subtle changes, mostly coloring and font size) and added something I think is pretty spiffy: Avatar Support!

That’s right – if you post in the comments, you’ll be able to have your own avatar show up, thanks to… Well, I guess WordPress (the backend for my blog) and Gravatar (the guys who provide the back end for the avatars) merging. Basically, it’s something that was added into the 2.6 update, and I figured I’d go ahead and implement it. You don’t have to sign up or use it – mostly I just wanted to give another option to the three or four people who read and occasionally reply to my stuff.

Also of note: The built-in image gallery seems to be broken, so I’m going to continue hosting my images on my .Mac MobileMe account for the foreseeable future. I figure I’m paying for the service, and the media management there is a hell of a lot better than it is with the tools built into WordPress. So, for those of you who don’t like having to click away, I’m sorry but that’s just how things go.

Other than that, not much else to report at the moment. I should be sleeping right now, but I’m not – mainly because I’m just not all that tired. Maybe later I will be, but as yet not so much.

Here’s hoping!

Update
I’m a bit of an idiot: Turns out I had user registration turned off! Not that you need to register to comment (or have an avatar), but I figured I’d pop it back on just in case. Not sure why I had it turned off… I should maybe start making notes, possibly posting them somewhere I can find them easily later.

Well, LRR has done it again.
This weeks update is not funny at all, not a single bit of humor to be found.
Of course, that would be the point – it’s an interview with Uwe Boll.

No, really – a twenty minute interview with Dr. Uwe Boll.

You should check it out – it’s totally worth seeing.
