Camping - Not An Actual Image

Noel Coward - Camp Master

This weekend, Nadia and I are going to go camping.

For two days, and two nights, we will be sleeping in a tent, in sleeping bags, doing such exciting camping things as walking about, sitting in comfy chairs, and playing in water. Also on the list of things to do is cooking over a fire, making chili in a tiny tin pot, and… Well, that’s actually it I suppose.

We’ll be at Lake Mead, and I’ll be sure to take lots of pictures that I’ll never actually get around to posting.

Huzzah!

Scott Pilgrim vs The World Movie Poster

Scott Pilgrim vs The World

I am really required to put words here?

The movie has been out one full week – I know, I’ve counted the days.
The subtitle on the poster there is 100% fully correct – it is an epic epic of epicness. It’s a love story, a coming of age story, and a damn awesome brawler. It’s a fighting game made into a romantic comedy, with the best damn sound track and way more comic goodness than any one movie should have. It takes everything we love about games, about comics, about the 60′s Batman, and rolls it up Katamari style and serves it up on the big screen in a way that only Edgar Wright could do.

Yes, this is a movie by the guy who did Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz.

I do not have the words to describe this film. It does things that haven’t been done – successfully – in movies in a long, long time. It’s relentless, it’s fast paced, and for ####’s sake if you consider yourself any sort of geek or nerd or lover of things that are awesome you owe it to yourself to go see this movie right the hell now. From the opening logo crawl to the end credits, it’s a full on visual and sonic feast for the soul.

Yes – I said sonic. The soundtrack for this movie (all two of them) are f’ing great. This is the first time in recent memory that I’ve gotten home and immediately fired up the iTunes just so I could purchase the songs I had heard mere minutes before. While your eyes are being treated to flashy, tricky fights, your mind being massaged by great gags and odd happenings, your ears will be tenderly taken care of by a really special score.

I’m in lesbians with this movie.
You should be too.

So, I should probably blog more, huh?
Let’s see here…

Since the last time I wrote here, I attended a Star Trek convention (gallery link) with Nadia (which was a heck of a lot of fun), spent a load of time at work… Nadia leveled up, and achieved a full time job and is on the pass to a higher level visa…

We bought a hookah…

And… Um…

Hrm…

Yeah, that should just about catch you up.
This is the part where I say “I’ll blog more often”, but I think we both know that’s a load of dingos kidneys. More than likely I won’t.

But, if I do, I’ll let you know.

wpid-miskatonic-150x150-2010-07-22-08-411.png Captains Personal Log

Today I made Captain, and shortly thereafter was awarded the helm of a new ship – the U.S.S. Miskatonic.
She’s a long range science vessel, of the Intrepid class. Well, mostly Intrepid class – the main hull is of the new Discovery class, but the rest of the ship is pure Intrepid.

Some of my colleagues have remarked upon my continuing to accept commissions on science vessels, since I do have a more tactical background and might feel more at home on the bridge of a faster, more powerful ship. While that may be true, to some extent, I prefer the feel of the science ships. They may not be as flashy, but they’ve got it where it counts.

And, really – isn’t exploration and the accumulation of knowledge the founding tenants of both Starfleet and the Federation of Planets? Aren’t we all supposed to be striving to make ourselves better, rather than blowing up everyone else in the sky?

Lately, I’ve been doing all too much of that – spending what seems like ages in Romulan space, sending the shattered fragments of the Romulant Star Empire – and the fledgling Reeman whatever they are – to their untimely deaths. Many of my crew see this as a necessary precaution, having grown up in a time of war. But I remember before – before the war, even before the Romulan Empire fell.

I shouldn’t remember that – I’m not much older than most of my crew. But here I am, sitting in The Big Chair, decades away from my home time. Not through anything Temporal Affairs would be interested in – I went the long way, via cryo-sleep. Damn the Borg, damn them for robbing me of my friend and family, of taking me from Copernicus Station that fateful day…

For turning me into something other than human, but less than normal.

But, no – today is a good day. A day of celebration – The Miskatonic is mine to command.
This should be a grand old voyage, indeed.
